We are very pleased so far with our new Macchiato. We have the belt timing “chain” but otherwise pretty standard equipment. Ours is set up with Campy Record 10 speed.
The bike is light, of course, and in riding is very responsive, quick, and sporty. By that I mean it accelerates easily and quickly, and handles really more like a light single than like a tandem. At very low speeds the steering may occasionally be slightly sluggish. By that I mean it may take some conscious effort at times to steer at low speeds. This is minor and at low speeds only; in general I am not really aware of the steering, which is to say the bike goes where I want it to go without any real awareness from me that I am steering or driving. There is no squirreliness, which to me means the bike doesn’t deviate much from a straight line, but at the same time I don’t have to think or focus on steering - it just goes where I want to go.
The bike has perhaps a tiny bit of flex in the frame, but I do not find stoker movement troublesome, nor does it have any significant element of stoker steer. It smooths out the road and I suspect will be very comfortable over long distances. Our longest ride so far is about 30 miles and we’ve only put a few hundred miles on it so far.
So, evaluation so far is all good. What a sweet, fast machine to ride! I think the best thing about it is that it behaves really as an extension of our bodies, without any conscious effort from us. Perhaps the only tandem we’ve ever ridden where there was not at least a minimal learning curve. We just got on and rode off. Nuff said.

Jim Reed wrote us this note about his new Macchiato.
Last night was our maiden journey on our new tandem and all I can say is WOW! The Macchiato is incredible—it is light, fast and handles like my road race single. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with this bike. I have been riding a Santana Sovereign tandem for 11 years and I always considered that bike to be nice but there is a night and day difference between that bike and the new Macchiato. And I think the difference goes well beyond the fact that the Macchiato is a full 10 lbs lighter! The Macchiato simply rides like my racing single—it carves corners, climbs smoothly, and is solid under hard accelerations.
The only problem I have with the bike is that the high-end gearing is simply too low— maybe it was our wild enthusiasm for the new bike but my wife and I were shocked that we were running out of gears while accelerating down rollers (we love to punish singles on rollers and downhills!). I am not sure if it is a 52/11 or 12 (I haven’t checked yet) but whatever it is, I know we need to go higher. Does FSA make a 54 or 56 chainring?
I also wanted to tell you about our wonderful experience with Kingsbury’s Cyclery where we purchased our Macchiato. Paul Kingsbury spent hours talking to us, taking measurements and agonizing over the small details necessary to make this tandem truly exceptional. Paul quickly and expertly assembled our new tandem and even blessed it with a champagne toast. Kingsbury’s is an incredible bike shop and I am so glad he will be carrying Co-Motion bikes. After our rave reviews of the Co-Motion with our bike group last night, I suspect you are about to sell a bunch more bikes!
Once again, my thanks to everyone at Co-Motion who built this beautiful bike we will treasure for many years.
Thanks, Jim
