From dropping off election ballots by bike to picking up kids from school, the Fife Family seizes every opportunity to ride together. Read more about their family adventures on their two Mochas below and see what they're up to next on via their Instagram @Fife45BirdDogs.
"We live in Bend, Oregon, and we have two Mochas. For our recent Banks to Vernonia rails-to-trails ride in Oregon, we got a quote for a dog-sitter for our two Brittanys, but instead decided to get Burley Tail Wagons and bring them with us. It rained and sleeted on us for most of the trip, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the lush trail through the woods.
Our Weiser River rails-to-trails ride in Idaho was sunny and hot. Our favorite part was watching a great blue heron and a bald eagle. We were afraid that David might have heat exhaustion, but when he went to the doctor when we got home, it turned out that he had a lung abscess from a recent respiratory illness and landed in the hospital for five days and then had to be on antibiotics for six weeks. He could only resist riding his Co-Motion for the first couple of weeks.
Here is our younger son on a father-son date. We like to do monthly one-on-one dates with our sons, taking turns with each one. One of our favorite things about riding tandem bicycles is that you can talk and bond as you ride together, sharing the exhilarating experience of a getting cardio workout in the fresh air with the wind on your face. Tandems are a great equalizer of physical ability. You both get a great workout and stick together going the same speed. We originally got the tandems because the boys grew out of their tagalong bikes.
We have a tradition of submitting our election ballots by bicycle, on our two Co-Motion Mochas!
Here is an Independence Day ride. What better way to celebrate our country than riding your Made-in-the-USA bicycle? It makes us feel so free!
We love to wander around town on our two Co-Motion Mocha bicycles. We discovered a tree nursery hidden away. They also sell cool garden sculptures. We thought our Dragonfly and Firefly fit right in to this enchanted forest of dragons and gnomes.
We decided to order some of the garden sculptures. Here are our custom sculptures, representing us on our two Co-Motion Tandem Mocha Bicycles.
We try to replace car-errands with bike rides as often as possible. Here we are in the rain at Bend Senior High School picking up our older son from an extracurricular event. We like to bike-pool to work. Burn fat instead of gasoline! At first, I was teased pulling into work alone with my ghost rider after dropping off my husband, but when I explained that I came with one extra seat whilst the car-commuters arrived with 4-6 empty seats in their energy-guzzlers, the joke was on them. We think the answer to the Meta-crisis is bicycle commuting. It is great for your mental health, physical health, has zero waste, and free of air, noise, and light pollution. It preserves precious habitat from the destruction of roads and parking lots and eliminates road kill (besides maybe a few unlucky insects). If more people commuted by bicycle, we would have to design new-urbanist pedestrian-friendly cities that would strengthen our communities and relationships. This is definitely the best way to end our dependence on fossil fuels.
Here we are at a Deschutes public library where our son met the Bend Pops Orchestra for cello sectional practice. We occasionally bring the cello behind one of the tandems. The Tall Wagons come in handy!
One of our favorite daily rides takes us to a dead-end road for an out-and-back ride that we affectionally call Turkey Turn-About. One day, a wild turkey decided to chase us down this street. We usually stop and rest at the end, but this tom must have been feeling territorial and was lunging at us and flapping his wings aggressively. We wished that we had some Cheerios to try to distract it. Gratefully we managed to hop back on the bicycles and get rolling again before any talons got the best of us.
Along this same route is a little spot by a canal where we sometimes pause to rest. We have been told that we look like Christmas trees when we ride at night. Anything to help drivers to see us! We wear bright reflective vests, headlights and flashing tail lights, wheel lights, and shimmering reflective streamers to name a few of our ornaments. One of our favorite things about the tandem bicycles is that it is safer merging into traffic and sticking together through roundabouts than if the family were on four single bikes.
For our 25th wedding anniversary, we did an S240 bike-packing trip on our Mocha, leaving the dogs and our teenage boys home for their first overnight alone. They did not get themselves killed or burn the house down, so we counted it a success. We set up camp with a gorgeous view of our local piece of the Cascade mountains.
Here is hiking-a-bike along the Deschutes River Trail. We love to ride straight from our house and the river is so close, that we are tempted to bring our two Co-Motion Mochas despite some rough patches on the trail."- David, Karlene and Family.
